Growing Well was formed as an Industrial and Provident Society for the Benefit of the Community and holds tax-exempt charitable status. This legal structure holds the assets of Growing Well in community ownership in perpetuity. It is a membership organisation electing a Board of Directors each year. The organisation first began trading on 1st July 2004. It holds a farm business tenancy on six acres of National Trust land on the edge of the Lake District, and the operation is Soil Association certified. Produce, once harvested and packed, is sold to a variety of local businesses, including farm shops. A variety of training courses in horticulture are offered – including NVQ levels 1 and 2 and City and Guilds in Gardening. Training takes place on site, and is accredited in collaboration with Kendal College.
