Conclusion
From its beginnings as a visit to Durham by two interested individuals in November 2002, through to its opening for trading on the 1st July 2004, Growing Well’s progress has been rapid indeed.
Growing Well illustrates a key question facing advisers to social enterprises: to what extent should they get involved in the groups that they support? In Beren’s case this line is drawn clearly in two different places – and is dependent upon his roles and involvement within each social enterprise. For Beren at least, there is a clear differentiation between an initiative begun by himself where he is the social entrepreneur and the adviser’s role in supporting enterprises driven by others.
Growing Well is a social enterprise in for the long haul – with every expectation for success – and a clear set of objectives and benefits, provided for a very specific group of people whose needs are often overlooked by more mainstream services.
